Adam Sandler to received the 24th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Adam Sandler at a gala performance at the Kennedy Center on March 19.
The award honors people whose contributions to American culture are comparable to those of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, a novelist, and essayist from the 19th century.
According to Deborah F. Rutter, president of the Kennedy Center, “Adam Sandler has thrilled audiences for over three decades with his films, music, and his career as a fan favorite cast member on ‘SNL’.” “Adam has developed characters that have brought us to tears both from laughter and tears of joy. As we honor his career at a ceremony that is certain to bring together the best in comedy, I am anticipating an evening filled with hilarity unlike any other.
Sandler will get a replica of a Karl Gerhardt-sculpted bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain as part of the award. Richard Pryor, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Steve Martin, Neil Simon, Billy Crystal, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dave Chappelle, and Jon Stewart are just a few of the honorees who have previously received it.
Over $3 billion has been made by Sandler’s movies, which include hits like “Grown Ups,” “Big Daddy,” “The Longest Yard,” and “The Waterboy.”
